How to join a Sámi reindeer journey in Finnmark
If you want the deeper side of Sámi reindeer life in Finnmark, this is where to start. The right journey depends on three things: season, comfort level, and how close you want to be to real working reindeer life.

travel with the herd along ancient migration routes and live in a moving lavvu camp at the pace set by the reindeer.

Every Easter, Kautokeino becomes the cultural capital of Sápmi.
Experience reindeer racing, joik concerts, markets and Sámi community life with options ranging from guided premium to self‑guided.

Alta logistics and comfort level
• Several journeys can be planned from Alta, either because they take place near Alta or because pick-up can be arranged.
• Guests staying in Alta should tell us their hotel or area when contacting us.
• Several journeys are off-grid with basic facilities such as lavvu or cabin living.
• After booking, guests receive a detailed packing list. In general: wool layers, a windproof outer layer and good boots.
Important expectations
• These are real working traditions, not staged shows.
• Weather and reindeer movement can change the daily plan.
• Participation is limited to safe, guided tasks.
• Respect for animals, hosts and culture comes first.
• Northern Lights are never guaranteed.
• Infants are not permitted on most of these journeys. The calving day trip has a minimum age of 8+.

Q: Do I need a rental car?
A: Not necessarily. Several journeys can be planned with pick-up from Alta or nearby.
Q: Is this suitable for children?
A: Some journeys allow children, but most do not permit infants. The calving day trip is age 8+.
Q: Is there Wi-Fi?
A: Some journeys are intentionally off-grid. That is part of the experience.
Q: Are Northern Lights guaranteed?
A: No — it depends on weather and solar activity. Some seasons have excellent chances on clear nights, but nothing is promised.
Q: Is this a staged show?
A: No. These are real, nature‑led experiences with a Sámi reindeer‑herding family. Timing and activities follow the herd and conditions.

Q: How physically demanding is it?
